The dragonfly, admired for her elegance and her lightness*, is also a symbol of Japan,
who is sometimes designated under the name of “Island of the dragonfly” ( Akitsu-shima ).
This denomination, explained by the form of the island of Hondô, arises from the legendary
exclamation of Jimmu-tennô, founder of the dynasty, while is was contemplating the country
from a height : “She looks like a dragonfly !”
The sensation or the oneiric images of lightness, evocated by the dance, a transparent
and floating voile, the mobile grace of certain gestures, music, everything that is aerial,
vaporous, upward, are linked to the symbols of elevation. All these signs symbolize an
aspiration for a superior life, to an already going on deliverance from anguish, to a
liberation, that you can look for sideline to escapism, but that would only be a
deceptive lightness ; or sideline to personal surpassing,
and that would be true lightness.
