Belt

First of all the belt is a clothe, and, if you believe the stories of the Genesis,
like the one in the Bible, the belt is even the first clothe, the ethnographic observations appear to agree on that point.
That is what fundamentally differentiate her symbolic field from the one of the buckle.
The buckle starts from the cosmos, the belt starts from the man.

Tied around the kidneys at the birth, she links the one to the everything, at the same time that she binds the individual.
All the ambivalence of her symbolism is summed up in those two verbs. Linking, she reassure, comfort, give strength and power;
binding, she carries along submission, dependence, that means restrictions, chosen or imposed, of the freedom.

Materialization of an engagement, of an oath, of a given wish, the belt often takes a making sacred initiatory value and,
materially speaking, becomes a visible emblem, often glorifying, who proclaims the strength and the powers whom wearing his invested with:
like the belts of the judokas with various colors, the belts of the soldiers, where the weapons are suspended, like the scarf of a city mayor too,
and the innumerable votive belts, initiatory or ceremonial that mention traditions and rites of every people.

In India, according to the rite of initiation, the rolling of the belt takes a high signification.
After having offered his oblations, the master takes place at the north of the hearth, his face turned towards the orient;
the boy takes place at the east of the hearth, his face turned towards the occident.

Then, the master takes the belt and rolls her around the waistline of the boy, from the left to the right, till he does 3 turns.
At each turns he pronounce this formula :

She came, protecting us from evil spells, purifying our skin, clothing herself with strength,
thanks to the might of her breathing, the sacred belt, the friendly Goddess !

( Asvatayana Grhyasûtra 1, 19 - Veda 303 - 304 )

The belt is, in this example, initiatory by herself, symbol of protection de purification and of strength.
Her might comes from the breathes* that we give the spiritual and divine meaning in that another article.
The belt is here qualified of friendly Goddess. Her knots can remain the knot of Isis of the ancient Egypt,
who was himself a sign of life, him too symbol of protection, of purity, of strength in the immortality.

In the Bible, she is also a symbol of close union, of constant attachment, in the double meaning of
benediction in the union and tenacity in the malediction ( Psalm 109 V. 19 ) :

He had a taste for cursing; let it recoil on him! No taste for blessing; let it never come his way!

Cursing has been the uniform he wore; let it soak into him like water, like oil right into his bones.

Let it be as a robe which envelops him completely, a sash which he always wears.

The Jews, used to celebrate the Passover, according to the order of Yhwh with a belt tied around the kidneys.

The traveler wears a belt : that means that he is ready to face the danger.

The composition of that belt symbolize the vocation of her wearer, she indicates the humility or the might,

she always indicates a choice and a concrete exercise of that choice. That's why when the Christ says to Peter that,

young, he was used to put himself his belt, but that days were coming where someone else will put his belt on him ( John 21 - V; 18 ),

that means that first Peter was choosing his destiny but that later he'll hear the call of a vocation.

The belt protects against evil spirits, in the same way that fortress walls around a town protects her against her enemies.

to gird one's kidneys for walking or for any other tonic and spontaneous action, was seen by the Ancients

as a proof of energy and by consequence as disdain of any kind of softness ; that was at the same time

the mark of the chastity of the habits and of the purity of the heart, and also, according to Saint - Gregory,

the symbol of chastity.  ( Abbot Aubrey - History and theory of the religious symbolism - Volume 4, 2 , 150 s )

It's also with that meaning, linked to the one of contingence, that has to be interpreted too, in the Christian tradition.

the waistcloth beared by the priest to celebrate the mass, or the leather of linen belt of the monks,

and the symbol is far from stopping there, in that image, since the kidneys, according to the Bible,

symbolize the might and strength ( Psalms 18, 28, 40 ), but also the Justice ( Isaiah 11 V. 5 ).

We understand then, more deeply, why certain monastic rules, like Saints Basile ones, prescribes to the monks

to sleep with clothes, the kidneys surrounded by a belt. A comment of Pseudo - Dionysius the Areopagite

confirms that important face of the symbol, and his interpretation in a meaning at the same time material and sublimed:

the celestial intelligences, he wrote, are dressed with a dress and a belt, that have to be symbolically understood :

The belts signify the care with whom they conserve the genesic* forces , the power they have to meditate,

to unify their mental might's by entering themselves, by harmoniously enrolling on themselves in the

indefectible circle of their own identity.

The belt broaden here her symbol, like shows the Christian art, whose spiritual fecundity is obtained by

mental concentration, and at the same time by the permanency of the personal identity, who is one of the most

important aspects of the faithfulness. To be unfaithful, is to change identity; to be fecund, it's to multiply one's identity.

We could show an infinity of examples, where appears at every degrees the tight relation between the words belt, chastity and fecundity.

Like the belt of the widows, during the middle age, that they used to toss in the grave of their husbands when they renounced to their heritage,

and those marvelous belts, condemned by the vatican's councils, supposed to ease the childbirths.

All that symbolic field also close together the belt - in which the traveler used to hide his money and suspend his weapons - with the horn of abundance.**

If knotting the belt is accomplishing a wish, to unknot her is to break that wish. The muslim tradition says of a Christian who abjures his faith

to enter islam that he breaks his belt. To unknot his belt, is for a magistrate or a soldier, to renounce to exercise his function, to disarm, to surrender,

there is here metonymy between the belt and the weapons she carries or the function who she is the insignia.

If the belt is not voluntarily abandoned, but wrested, despoiled by someone else, that becomes a degradation, a mutilation, a rape.

To say about a young woman in the Greco-roman world that she unknotted her belt had for meaning that she was giving herself.

Here appears, in opposition to the belt of chastity, passively imposed by the lord and master, the virgin belt, that the young

woman used to wear with pride till the night of the wedding, where the husband unknot her.

That belt, says Festus, was made out of ewe wool and had for meaning that, at the same time

that that wool became flake united to herself, in the same way the husband was tied to his wife.

The husband untied that belt knotted by the knot of Hercules, as a omen that he'll be as happy

then Hercules by the number of his child's, whom had 70 of them.

Let's note to finish that the castrating aspect of the symbol that the popular wisdom retained,

with the expression : "doing belt tonight !" ( :), and that the gilded belt, according to the proverb,

doesn't match a good reputation, specifically designated, during the 19th century, a woman kept by.
